Microsoft has advised that a flaw in manually constructed Windows 11 installation media may prevent future security updates from being received by installations made on new USB or CD media. This also includes media that have October 2024 or November 2024 patches included.
According to the Microsoft known issues page, a device installed with affected media is permanently unable to accept further updates. However, a system updated through Windows Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog is not affected.
Microsoft's Solution
To solve this problem, Microsoft recommends rebuilding the installation media with the patch that was published on 10 December 2024. For those who had already installed Windows using damaged media, the only choice is to reinstall the OS with the correct files in place. The prevent problem ensure that the installation media for Window 11 version 24H2 contains updates.
Bleeping Computer has reported several significant bugs in Window 11 version 24Hs2, including serous audio issues, outdated Google Workspace Sync problems, and compatibility hurdles with Ubisoft games. Though developers are implementing fixes, these persistent issues seriously cast doubt on the stability of version 24H2.
The importance of keeping installation tools and operating systems updated is very strongly emphasized by Microsoft. As a precaution against vulnerabilities that may arise, it encourages users to update the operating systems, using mechanisms like Windows Update, to improve their systems generally.
